"Originally, the carefree and bubbly personality that Barbie appeared to possess was nothing but a front that she had constructed in order to make herself conform to Philippine society’s expectations upon an individual of her gender and social class. Barbara had spent most of her childhood being bullied for being smart and liking books rather than boys, and – in order to avoid that – she figured that it would be best to simply ignore one’s own wishes and be capable of filling in any container that society gave to her. While she retained the cheerful disposition and the love for looking good, Barbie eventually took back the aspects of herself that she had ignored for the entirety of her teenage years: her sharp wit, her propensity to speak up at the soonest opportunity, and her desire for knowledge.

Barbara has been lucky in the sense that unlike other vampires, she has barely had to experience the agony of living one’s unlife alone and in the dark. She was allowed, on the get-go, to walk out into the sun. She came home to parents who did not bother attempting to understand the situation and focused solely on loving their daughter in the only ways that they knew how: by fully supporting her in all of her endeavors. She was surrounded by blade mates who pushed her into doing things for herself rather than other people. Because of all of this, the distance between her human self and her vampiric nature is not nearly as wide as it could be, and she has a very real motivation to stay alive and reclaim her humanity by reaching Golconda."
